Back to Koh Phangan to dance under the full moon with 20,000 people October 17, 2010

I got the morning ferry back to Koh Phangan and was so stoked to be get to stay with my new England friend Kirsty and FINALLY see the full moon party. I was intending to head straight for the hospital to see about my infection on my ankle, but made a split second decision to stop at the pharmacy and see if they had the antibiotic my mom had suggested for skin infections. They had it and I bought a couple of packs and took the first dose and called my mom, waking her up as it was close to midnight in Oregon for her advise. I didn’t want to go to a doctor if at all possible so after speaking to her I decided to take it for a day or two and see if it got better. I headed off to Coco Bungalows where I was meeting Kirsty and sneaking into her room to avoid having to pay extra. (more…)

watching Scott's boat get further and further away 😦

I watched Scott’s boat get smaller and smaller and felt a moment of sadness that he was gone. But when I got on the boat for Koh Tao, I immediately met a really cool guy who worked for one of the dive shops in Koh Tao called Easy Divers….sounded pretty reasonable and I liked the name! I agreed to walk to the shop with him when we arrived and I promptly passed out for the ride since I had barely slept the night before. When we arrived and I checked out Easy Divers in person, everything sounded good and I wouldn’t have to do too much walking which was good because I was nursing some wounds on my feet and legs from the past week. I checked right into my bungalow and was set to begin my PADI open water dive course that afternoon. I had pretty much planned to get my dive certification in Koh Tao and get some rest after so much going on the past 2 weeks. The moment I was in my bungalow alone, it hit me that I was actually alone for the first time in nearly 3 weeks. Then I really missed Scott for a bit until I went off to my scuba class and was distracted by the ridiculously exaggerated film I had to watch to get started. (more…)

Last Few Days with Scott and new friends in Koh Phangan October 1, 2010

getting crowded with packs in the tuk-tuk

Sure enough, Scott and I were in for one hell of a day of travel starting with a tuk-tuk ride in the rain jam-packed full of people and huge rucksacks. I was in the corner and the bags piled all around me. We all made bets as to how many backpackers they were going to try to fit in back. I was guessing 8 and I’m pretty sure we ended up with 7 which means 7 backpacks as well! The rest of the journey was fairly uneventful and after a bus ride and a ferry ride, we arrived in Koh Phangan sometime in the late afternoon.

pretty nice pool on the beach in front of our room

We had a ride waiting to take us to our resort near the pier where we arrived right on the beach with a nice pool and pool bar. Scott and I didnt waste anytime to head into Haad Rin and see what this known party island had in store for us. (more…)

The Western Islands and Coast of Thailand September 17, 2010

We arrived in Surat Thani sometime around 7am to wait for our bus to take us to Phuket. When our bus arrived, the woman told us it was full BUT that didn’t mean we weren’t getting on it, it just meant we weren’t getting a seat! Scott was so surprised that we were even standing on the bus but I had had a similar bus situation in Central America and knew what was I was dealing with. We piled in and were standing asses to elbows for the first hour or so but as the bus would stop and people got off we were able to eventually grab some seats one by one. Scott and I passed the time by “people watching” our crowded bus since we couldn’t very well sleep standing up. When the bus ticket employee Thai dude was collecting tickets and pushing his way through the crowded bus, I watched him wake up this guy who looked like he had been through hell and back when he was woken up for his ticket. He was crashed hard on his neck pillow and only woke up long enough to yell at his friend across the aisle to give the man his ticket. Something about his obvious disorientation caught my and Scott’s attention and we gave each other a look and smiled like “that guy had a rough one…hahaha”. (more…)

Tuk-tuk’n the streets of Bangkok August 22, 2010

When the plane landed in Bangkok at 2am and I was waiting in the immigration line, I noticed a big muscular “All American” looking guy in line behind me mainly because he was good looking. When I saw him again at the baggage claim and realized I was going to have to take a cab by myself into Bangkok at 230 in the morning to a hostel having no idea what kind of area it was in, I decided if it was better if I was with a strong muscular man than on my own. I waited to see if he had a backpack or luggage because if it was a backpack then I was going to ask him to share a cab. Luckily for me, not only did he have a backpack, but also a yoga mat tucked into the back so he MUST be cool. Turns out he had no plan and was just going to sleep in the airport and then plan to head south so he was open to joining me at a hostel for a night and figuring things out from there. I didn’t know it at the time, but approaching Scott at the airport was the beginning of two and a half wild weeks we would be spending traveling around Bangkok and the beaches and islands of southern Thailand.
