One bad ass chick on one bad ass journey

Back to the USA for 2 weeks…..LESSONS LEARNED in the first 3 months of travel July 27, 2010

Im going to take this point in my blog where I spent 2 weeks back in the states visiting family and having an absolute blast at the Lightning in a Bottle music festival to go over a bit of “lessons learned” in the past 3 months of my travel abroad. I had never really done much travel outside of the country besides Mexico and this was my first time getting out in the world on my own and really pushing myself out of my comfort zone so I had (and still have) a lot to learn. I don’t feel like Mexico really counts because everywhere I went in Mexico was so touristy that I never really had to stop speaking English and living in San Diego, we have a pretty good sense of Mexico anyways. Sun is shining, bombs are exploding? May 6, 2010

Back on my own and on my way back to my favorite place, Puerto Viejo, I was feeling pretty good. I managed to communicate with the taxi driver in Limon to take me from one bus station to the next to catch the correct bus. Just a few short weeks ago I went into panic mode anytime I had to transfer buses, taxis or basically try to get from point A to B on my own. Although my Spanish skills were still what I considered basic, my confidence that things would work out had improved creating a much less stressful traveling experience. On the bus ride between Cahuita and Puerto Viejo along the Caribbean coast, the road is pretty bad but the drivers are used to this and swerve all over the road to avoid the largest potholes. I don’t know if our driver was daydreaming or tired or what, but this was a much bumpier ride than usual. (more…)

La Tortuga Feliz….in the end- just not feeling it May 1, 2010

I was able to walk to the bus station listed on my directions and instructions for pick up to get to La Tortuga Feliz from my hostel in San Jose, Tranquilo Backpackers. I had to take a bus to Baatan and would then be met by someone from the project and would continue on. I met another girl on the bus ride over who was also going to be volunteering named Michaela from Austria. She had met someone at her hostel the night before who had just finished her volunteer time at La Tortuga Feliz and had given her a little background. Apparently, the bug bites were a big problem so I was happy I had plenty of DEET…and not that silly 5% nonsense they sell in Costa Rica but the 90% straight up poison deet. (more…)

44 km trek through Corcovado Park and my first night in San Jose April 16, 2010

Rica and I woke up at the crack of dawn on Sunday morning ending Semana Santa to catch the first water taxi to mainland so she could continue to San Blas and I could return to Corcovado for some trekking through the jungle with a nature tour guide I had met there before. We arrived in Almirantes, Panama and proceeded to watch bus upon bus arrive full and leave even fuller. This is when we began to realize that maybe this was not going to be a good traveling day. It seemed that EVERY person in Central America was off for the holiday and heading home…..today. DOH! (more…)

Rasta Life! Right near the beach….boooy April 8, 2010

Finally, I was on my way to the Caribbean side of Costa Rica before heading into Bocas Del Toro. I just knew I was going to love it there. Whats not to love? Beautiful waters, reggae music, relaxed vibes….among other things. The buses were crazy crowded because it was the Sunday leading up to Semana de Santa which means the entire Central America region is off work to celebrate the holiday. I had heard about this and the main thing I had heard was that at some point they were going to stop selling alcohol for 2-3 days and I would need to stock up. (more…)

One fine night in San Ramon April 7, 2010

Filed under: Costa Rica — jrobamf @ 10:10 pm

I didn’t have any reason to stay in San Ramon from a tourist perspective but I had read this guys profile when I first signed up for couchsurfing and he seemed like the coolest guy from all the references people had left him. And he was a native Costa Rican and I thought it would be good to stay with someone with some cultural perspective. (more…)

Waterfalls, Volcanoes and Waterslides….OH MY! April 4, 2010

Filed under: Costa Rica — jrobamf @ 2:28 am

When Erika and I left Rancho Margot, I was actually bumming pretty hard because I wanted to stay longer but it was a little bit more than my budget allowed so I had to be moving on. When we rolled into town, needless to say I was not impressed. Its difficult to go from the most beautiful and pristine surroundings to a dirty and plain looking town. We were able to find a cheap hostel called Gringo Pete’s and were given each our own set of bunk beds and a private room to share. I was especially fond of the bathroom sink actually being in the room and not the bathroom. Kinda made it feel like a jail cell but much friendlier due to my Scooby Doo sheets. (more…)
